Wolow commune

Wolow commune

Wołów is a district town situated 40 km north-west of Wrocław. The source documentation of Wołów dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. Its historical fate is embedded in the history of Piast Silesia, the period of Czech, Habsburg and Prussian rule. Despite severe war damage in 1945, settlers arriving mostly from the former Polish Eastern Borderlands managed to bring the town back to life relatively quickly. Houses, public buildings and facilities, technical infrastructure were rebuilt, and historic buildings including churches, the town hall and the surviving fragments of the historic city walls were restored. The historic town hall now houses the Town Hall, while the castle, which dates back to medieval times and has undergone numerous reconstructions over the past centuries, is now the seat of the District Starost's Office. Of the sacred buildings, the Church of St. Charles Borromeo and the Church of St. Charles Borromeo are noteworthy.

Wołów is located in the valley of the middle Oder, a mighty and majestic river. As a result, the landscape here is considerably more hilly than on the lazy flowing Barycz River, which is of great importance for the landscape and relief. Cyclists travelling in the Wołów commune have several cycle routes at their disposal, including authoritative routes prepared and marked in the field by the Town and Commune Office. Of great interest so far is the only cycle route, leading along the former railway line, from Wołów to Lubiąż. There are plans to extend this popular route and to build further cycle routes to connect the commune of Wołów with neighbouring communes.

In the commune of Wołów there are many monuments worth seeing, the most important and best known of which is the monastery complex in Lubiąż. Cyclists will not meet many cyclists on the routes, which will certainly be appreciated by those who do not like the hustle and bustle.
